Amsterdam is a city full of museums: from the national Rijksmuseum to the modern Moco Museum and from the Eye Film Museum to many old canal houses you can visit. Did you know that there are more than 60 museums in the city? This makes Amsterdam the ideal destination for art lovers. However, the abundant choice in museums can also be a bit daunting. Do you want to see old art, archeology, contemporary pieces or science exhibitions? We can help you with that; in this blog post you will find a list of three museums you cannot skip while visiting Amsterdam. Which Amsterdam art museum will you visit while you’re there?
Art museums in Amsterdam
For art museums in Amsterdam, the best place to start is at Museumplein. Around this square you find the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum and Moco Museum. The Rijksmuseum has a large collection ranging from the middle ages to now, telling the story of the Netherlands thus far. If it’s modern and contemporary art you’re looking for, Stedelijk and Moco Museum are the place to go. Stedelijk Museum is known for its experimental exhibitions and in Moco Museum you will find famous contemporary artists such as Banksy and Warhol. Of course, the Van Gogh Museum is dedicated to one man and one man only: Vincent van Gogh, one of the most famous painters in the Netherlands.
Learn about Dutch history
There are also many museums in Amsterdam that teach you about Dutch history. From beautifully decorated canal houses which take you back to the seventeenth century, to entire houses decorated in the classic 1950s style. One historical museum everyone must visit when they visit Amsterdam, however, is the Anne Frank House. This is the place where young Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazi’s during World War II. It may be one of the more dark parts of Dutch history, but it is definitely worth a visit.
Science museums in Amsterdam
Even if you are not necessarily the artsy type, don’t fret. There is lots more to discover in Amsterdam. One museum that is always a hit with adults and kids alike is NEMO science museum, near the central train station. This is not a boring museum where you will walk from exhibit to exhibit, but a place where you will be able to discover science and technology for yourself. NEMO has a lot of interactive experiments in which visitors can take place, making it an ideal destination for families with kids. Adults will also enjoy climbing to the roof of this strangely shaped building, as it gives you a wonderful view of the city centre of Amsterdam and the IJ-river next to the museum.
