Is Jowai Meghalaya’s best-kept secret?

When we talk about Meghalaya, Shillong and Cherrapunji always come to mind. We know Shillong as the state capital and a place with ultra cool vibes, and Cherrapunji as a destination with the best of natural beauty and cultural experiences. But, did you know that there is one hidden gem in the West Jaintia Hills, a destination called Jowai?

Jowai is the headquarters of the West Jaintia Hills district and is easily one of the most scenic destinations in Meghalaya. Jowai does not feature regularly on a tourist’s itinerary, and we are here to change that.

Home of the Pnar people, Jowai is located on a plateau. It’s the endless rolling hillocks punctuated by occasional pine groves and berry bushes that takes our breath away. Jowai is just 66 km from the capital city of Shillong, and makes for a very cool and picturesque drive. When the weather turns and there’s mist all around, Jowai gets even more beautiful!

Jowai is a small yet busy town and might not give you a glitzy and glamorous holiday. But, if you have come so far (geographically), it’s safe to assume that you are not here for that. So, when in Jowai, hit the road and travel locally, for most cool adventure spots are only short distances away.

For instance, the famous Krang Suri waterfall lies just 30 km from Jowai. Here, you can rent a life vest and go swim in the falls. Closer than that is the Tyrshi Falls, located just 8 km from Jowai. It is a popular local hang out spot, and the waterfall is stunning!

One of the most intriguing attractions near Jowai is the Nartiang Monoliths site. Have you heard of it? Located just 24 km from Jowai, Nartiang is a small village, home to a large collection of monoliths (in one place). Some of these monoliths were erected to commemorate war achievements, and some for ceremonial purposes.
