Fancy whisking the whole family away by train for a weekend in York? How about staying in a 5* hotel, exploring the beautiful city’s Roman and Viking history, and visiting a variety of attractions, museums and art galleries?

What if we told you that you could do all this — and more — for free?

We’ve teamed up with Visit York and LNER to give you the chance to win a family trip to York, with accommodation, activities and train travel all covered. Here’s what the prize includes:

Stay at The Grand, York

The Grand, York is an excellent base for exploring the city.

A two-night family stay at the swish The Grand, York. It’s the only 5* hotel in York, and is located overlooking the city walls, just a five-minute walk from York station, making it an ideal base for exploring… if you can tear yourselves away, that is. The stay includes bed and breakfast, and spa access, so you can make the most of the swimming pool, spa whirlpool, gym and relaxation area at this Grade II* listed hotel.

Visit York Passes

City Cruises York is included with the Visit York Pass.

Make the most of your city adventure with a two-day Visit York Pass for the whole family. These handy little tickets get you access to the city’s top attractions, including (deep breath)… Clifford’s Tower, The York Dungeon, City Cruises York, JORVIK Viking Centre, York Castle Museum, the Van Gogh Immersive Experience, York Minster, York Cocoa Works, The Yorkshire Museum… and plenty more.

Start your day in the 10th century on the ride experience at JORVIK Viking Centre, before stepping inside Van Gogh’s famous paintings, then walk down a recreation of a Victorian street at York Castle Museum. Learn how chocolate is made (and take part in a special tasting) at York Cocoa Works, and explore the beautiful interior of York Minster. Finish your day ogling views over the city from the top of Clifford’s Tower.

You can spend your second day going a little more off the beaten track. Wave your Visit York Pass to get into York Cold War Bunker, a blast-proof hideout designed as a nerve-centre to monitor fallout in the event of a nuclear attack. Alternatively, descend five metres below a city centre pub to visit a Roman bath house, rediscovered during excavations in the 1930s.

York’s a fairly compact city, so getting between most attractions on foot is a doddle — and a great way to see the historic streets and buildings. Look out for some wonky houses and shops as you go!
