SYDNEY, N.S. — A northern Cape Breton woman and her family’s hopes of flying to Florida to visit Walt Disney World were grounded after being unexpectedly bumped from their flight out of Halifax.

But more harrowing for Robynne King was how she, her husband and family members said they were treated by WestJet representatives.

“We came home on Christmas Day when the airline couldn’t make any reasonable attempt to get us to Orlando,” said King, a schoolteacher from South Harbour in the Cape Breton highlands.

Canadian government ‘concerned’ with Sunwing meltdown | News

The Canadian government is criticising leisure specialist Sunwing Vacations after an operational meltdown left hundreds of passengers stuck when winter weather disrupted the carrier’s operations earlier this week.

The Toronto-based company, like its US peer Southwest Airlines, has been scrambling to sort through the mess, leaving customers frustrated and angry. Canadian media reports that some of the carrier’s passengers have been waiting to be repatriated from Latin American holiday destinations including Cancun for up to five days.

“I am very concerned with the current situation with Sunwing Airlines,” Canada’s minister of transport Omar Alghabra wrote on 28 December on Twitter.

Top former Russian general ‘dies suddenly’ the day after Putin cancelled trip to his factory

A former commander of Russian ground forces with close ties to Ukraine died ‘suddenly’ the day after Vladimir Putin abruptly cancelled a trip to the tank enterprise where he worked as an international sales ambassador.

Alexei Maslov, 69, passed away on Christmas Day in a Moscow military hospital, the Uralvagonzavod plant announced.
